They are a nice defensive tank. So you should never as you said "Bump right into a IS"
You need to keep your enemy at a distance. And stay around other tanks like mediums or another TD, so you have support, and so one tank cant dance around you tracking you.
We (two T44's) killed a jag tiger a couple of games ago in a similar way, except we just rammed and blocked him, pulled up parallel to him etc, and basically just kept away from his front and preventing him from moving/turning.
EDIT# as for the multi tracking, A big tank firing a huge round at close range aiming for your tracks, realistically its got to blow them. I really don't think you can have a, "well you have shot my tracks once, you cant shoot them any more, and if you do it does no damage". Sorry i know its frustrating. : ) But maybe just stay in pairs.
