Tanitha: Beta testing is good for everyone.
For the consumer:
* It enables you to try before you buy. IE you can play without having to pay, to test the game out, like a trial.
(Although WoT is listed as a FTP with micro-transactions, you've been getting free gold which is normally bought so you can test premium features out) At the moment we are given 4500 gold a month free, a value of about $18. And recently beta testers were given a further 8000 gold.
* You get a advantage over non beta testers in the way of knowledge and skill, that a new player on release wont get.
* You get to help improve the game, a game that a lot of people will be playing for the next year+. The devs do listen, and feedback can help shape the game.
* You get to help make sure the game is balanced and bug free for release.
Some bugs can permanently break a game on release. Like if a bug is exploited and some players end up with billions of credits or gold.
* ETC... lots of other reasons.
It benefits the developer:
* They get valuable feedback, so they know the game is what people will like and play, that they can improve their game with.
* It helps them with their financing/loans etc, IE they can tell the bank that they have a game in progress that 100,000 people are playing and they can start generating a expected income and profit, which they can then lend against if needed.
* They get to test their servers under a load, and then can improve and tweak them so they handle it.
* ETC... lots of other reasons.
The beta is voluntary, no-one is making you "test" their game, Some people do prefer to wait until release so they only play the finished polished game, and are not put off by a unfinished buggy game, that's their choose. But for most people partaking in the beta is beneficial for everyone.
On release, everyone starts out even, to have it any other way is not fair. This is the way it works and the way its done, I take it this is your first Beta... Would you like to start playing on release day, day 1, to find people in IS7's that they earned in beta under a different balance system?
