Is the matchmaking purely random (within your tank's tier spread), or does it also take into account something personal of the player in the tank (e.g. premium account, (recent) winrate, profitability of the player, etc.)?

Overlord: At this stage it's almost random and dependa only on the exact tier
structure of the waiting queue. So theoretically you can be thrown
in battle of the highest combat tier possible for your tank all the
time.
The new MM mechanics will do both:
1) ensure approx equal distribution among its battle tiers
2) automatically interrupt bad series of being thrown into the toughest battles X times in a row
