Not trying to play a psychologist here, patriotism is not a bad feeling, especially for a citizen of a country that has seen a huge collapse recently (the USSR) and hasn't fully recovered so far.
As for way of communication, it's mostly a style that helps cope with Russian-speaking crowd (they love when you are a bit harsh with them).
