There are 72 clans on the map because that's the number of clans that realistically fit on the map at the moment. US server has 79 clans on the same map, i.e. roughly the same number. The Russian server, which plays on 7 regions, even has only 232 clans on the map.
On our server there are only 29 landing zones, only a fraction of those accessible to those in Western Europe and the UK due to time zone issues (at least for those with a job), that naturally limits who fits on the map. The upcoming freezing of tier X tanks for 7 days plus will likely cement this only further as I would expect resources to be pooled into landing zone defenses to protect NAP land behind, in particular since landing zones cannot be reconquered while you still hold territory.
Some trivia: We currently have about 4230 clans on the server, 925 of them having participated in clan wars over time, 308 of them succeeding to land after the initial sunrise period (520 tried to land in the last month, 119 succeeded, 27 of those for the first time), only 72 of them currently on the map, most of those being divisions of a bigger clan or part of an alliance/power block.
I realize it's likely working as intended, but you could also reduce the overall gold output on the map and instead spread it out over more provinces/regions to allow more clans to fit on it without causing any inflation in gold income. Added benefit is that we'd hopefully be able to play on different maps (current landing zones span only 13 maps, most of them being on Sand River).

Overlord: All in all it makes a nice summary. Still Clan Wars on EU have not
reached the required desnsity and level of competition to bring
extra terrotories in bulk and/or right away. Most probable way to
go is the introduction of African provinces some time in Q1 2012.
