A little history

The NC-27 Otsu-Gata Sensha also known in the western world as the Char NC1 was in essence a French tank. Build by the French for direct export but not used by the French army. It was supplied to such countries as Yugoslavia, Japan, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and other countries. It main place was set to derivative of the FT-17 which had been around since 1917. Mainly most of the tanks were to be built for export and sold to other nations. They was used for trials and proved to be unsuccessful for various reasons. Just to list a few the original engine, clutch and gearbox of the NC-27 was too weak for the tasks it was set and suffered constant reliability issues.

So when it was sold to Japan in 1929 they set about upgrading it.

Some other modifications were:

• The changing of the Renault engine (65hp) to a Mitsubishi diesel engine (75hp) Diesel is harder to ignite so therefore minimised engine fires upon round impact.
• 37mm French cannon removed and a 57mm installed.
• Increase in armor along the vehicle as current armor upon delivery of the vehicle was found to be inadequate.

They found these modifications transformed the vehicle and it became an inspirational vehicle.

It was then known as the NC-27 Otsu-Gata Sensha (type B) specific to the IRJ because of its heavily modified status.
