When you team-kill with good intent...

I had just started going up the hill when I just noticed a friendly hetzer ramming a friendly t49 continuously, and it didn't look like he was going to stop. After a short while the T49 took a shot at the Hetzer (non-upgraded gun) which took 30% of it's health away. The hetzer proceeded to back up, then made a full speed ram at the T49 into a wall and shot it with it's 10.5cm. The T49 was left with 6% health in total.
A friendly Kv-1 then rammed the hetzer, which retaliated by shooting the KV-1. The Kv-1 then shot the Hetzer with it's U-11. The result was the Hetzer being left with 30% health left. It pointed it's gun directly at the KV-1 and I had to make a quick decision. So, I shot and killed the Hetzer.
But was what I had done justified? or should I have left the situation the the KV-1, T49 and Hetzer? Was there a better way of dealing with the situation at hand?
Immediately after the hetzer types 'noob', followed by the T49 typing 'idiot'. I don't know who this is directed to. The hetzer or me?
Cue a host of other teammates having not seen the situation shout insults and threats of reporting...
I tried to defend myself, but they carried on. Not even the KV-1 who also shot the Hetzer defended me.
So I'm fairly certain my entire team had reported me for team damage.
I'm still new to the game and forums... so I'm not sure if I can do anything about this, nor can I justify the 14 complaints handed towards me.
But back to the main question I stated earlier:
Was me shooting the Hetzer justified, or was there a better thing to do with the situation?
