The_Chieftain:   Did he just rabbit on for ten minutes about a site he states he doesn't know, and then fail to answer the question?   He's a nice bloke. I've got an interview with him I'm going to put up soon. But he's been... controversial, especially recently with the whole nazi/socialist thing.

Would it just have become the M41A4 or would have have gotten an 'E' designation first?   My guess would be a new A designation. E designations seem to be for major structural changes to vehicles. Based on my observations A versions tend to be component changes and E versions tend to involve changes to major systems or structural components (power train, hull, different turret, etc). Short of having access to the documents that define what means what insofar as naming conventions go I can only guess based on my observations of what they've previously done.   For example, if the Army decided they wanted to change the engine over to a diesel my guess is it would have been a M41A3E2 or something like that.

A is "approved variant"   So there would have been an E designation when the vehicle was in testing. Once the system was approved for use and type classified, it would be changed to an A.
