The_Chieftain: According to Friedman, the logic behind the 8" guns on Lex was that they didn't want the big capital ships to be outranged by cruisers, which had no construction limits of numbers in the case that the carriers somehow ended up in gun range.  Presumably the logic was similar elsewhere.
