The_Chieftain:   Well, there is a kernel of truth behind it. I can't off-hand remember if it's columns of 'sand' in the steel , or steel rods in 'sand' (Actually, a kind of silica I believe), In either case, the effect of a penetrator suddenly encountering different levels of resistance on different parts of the penetrator is such that it seriously distresses it and reduces the effectiveness when it hits the next main armor belt.
